Prime Video’s LotR Rings of Power – First look at Orcs
“We spent a lot of time talking about what it would mean to
be an Orc in the Second Age,” said Weber. “It felt appropriate that their look
would be different, part of a wilder, more raw, Second Age, Middle-earth,
closer to where the First Age ends. As we meet them, they're not yet organized
into armies, they're a little more scattered and they've been scavenging. So
it's just a different time in their total story.”

The RoP Orcs have a very scary look and demeanor. It is
great to see the use of practical effects and the application of excellent
prosthetics to create a very earthy, gritty style of Orc, as opposed to the
overly CGI look of the creatures in The Hobbit movies. It is also encouraging
to see Tolkien lore implicit in these images. Orcs participated in battles such
as the Dagor Aglareb, Dagor Bragollach, Nirnaeth Arnoediad, and finally in the
War of Wrath, where they were almost extinguished. The Rop Orcs appear
disheveled with scavenged armor of what looks like dragon scale, ragged
chainmail and rough wood and bone helmets. They had been decimated and where
not the organised, equipped army we see in the Third Age stories. It has been
suggested that female Orcs will be depicted and that Weta Workshop has been
involved in the styling of the RoP Orcs.
