Weapons of the Second Age: Rings of Power

Some of the unique weapons of the Second Age of Middle-earth in Tolkien’s legendarium, which could play a vital role in the upcoming Rings of Power series:

Aeglos

The spear of Gil-galad, High-king of the Ñoldor. It was greatly feared by his enemies and Gil-galad wield the spear throughout the War of the Last Alliance We see this particular weapon for a brief moment in the prologue of the Fellowship of the Ring film.

Aranrúth

The cherished sword of King Thingol in the First Age. It was handed down to the generations that followed, including Elros, the brother of Elrond and the first King of Númenor, becoming an heirloom kept in the halls of the kings of Númenor. The sword was lost in the crushing waves that encompassed the Island. Aranrúth is only mentioned in text that Amazon does not currently have the rights to.

Narsil

Narsil, the most famous sword in Tolkien’s legendarium, created in the First Age by the Dwarven craftsmen Telchar. In the Second Age Narsil is Elendil sword during the War of the Last Alliance. During this battle, Elendil would fall, and the blade would break along with him. His son Isildur would pick up the broken blade, and with it, cut the Ring from Sauron’s hand. The Shards of Narsil would endure and be reforged during the War of the Ring.

Anglachel

Forged from a meteorite by Eöl, the Dark Elf during the First Age of Middle-earth. A sword with a mind of its own! Originally owned by King Thingol, it was used by Beleg Strongbow on his search for his friend, Túrin Turambar who was tragically killed by the sword. Reforged and given the new name Gurthang, meaning “iron of death”. Túrin would slay the dragon Glaurung with the black sword. Is this a certain broken sword hilt that appears quite frequently in the Rings of Power promotional images and the “hands” posters?

Bow of Bregor

Was one the few unique and named bows in Tolkien’s legendarium. It was an heirloom of the House of Bëor and was used by Bregor. When he passed, the bow was taken by the Edain to Númenor to remain in the halls of the kings. It too was destroyed during the Downfall and drowning of Númenor.

Hadhafang (non canon)

Hadhafang was the sword of Elrond Half-elven, and it bore an elvish inscription along its blade; it was created for Peter Jackson’s film and not mentioned in any of Tolkien’s writings. According to the movie’s publicity material, the sword was handed down from Idril to Eärendil and then to Elrond, who used it in the War of the Last Alliance at the end of the Second Age.
