Celebrimbor, Rings of Power
"In Eregion the craftsmen of the Gwaith-i-Mírdain, the
People of the Jewel-smiths, surpassed in cunning all that have ever wrought, save
only Fëanor himself; and indeed greatest in skill among them was Celebrimbor,
son of Curufin."
The Silmarillion, ‘Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age’
Grandson of the talented and rebellious Fëanor, Celebrimbor was the greatest craftsman in the Second Age of Middle-earth. His forging of the Rings of Power led to the dominion and eventual downfall of Sauron in the War of the Ring. Born in Valinor, Celebrimbor early years are not known, but he did follow his father and grandfather into the Exile of the Noldor. He was a jewelsmith for King Turgon in Gondolin and became lord of the elves of Ost-in-Edhil in Eregion as head of the Gwaith-i-Mírdain, a guild of elven craftsmen. Claiming to be an emissary of the Valar, Sauron came as Annatar and with his guidance and instruction, Celebrimbor and the Gwaith-i-Mírdain made less rings and the Rings of Power. Sauron eventually sacked Eregion, seizing many of the Rings and killing Celebrimbor.

“He’s cautious, he can be quite gullible,” says Edwards.
“He’s vain. He’s a brilliant craftsman. And he’s very meticulous. He can be a
bit of a user. But he can also be used. He’s proud. He prefers seclusion; he’s
not a people person. He is not terribly socially interested. He can be quite
blunt. He’s very ambitious. Colossally ambitious.”
“[He invented the name ‘mithril’ for the precious metal that the Dwarves mine and] that’s very cool, isn’t it? There’s no doubt about it. He’s a very cool guy. He invents a lot of stuff. And when you see inside his workshop, you will marvel just as much as I did when I saw it for the first time.”
