Don’t you just love the Middle-earth fandom!

The Rings of Power trailer was recently released with a sequence showing Galadriel placing an Elven helmet on a huge pile. Within days fans are undertaking mathematical computation attempting to compute the number of helmets, and thus the death toll from this horrific battle.

This sequence harkens to The Hill of the Slain, or Haudh-en-Ndengin, a huge mound that stood alone in the middle of the burned and ruined land of Anfauglith, in the north of Beleriand. It was raised by Morgoth's Orcs after the victory in the terrible battle of Nirnaeth Arnoediad, the Battle of Unnumbered Tears. Beneath it lay the bodies of the Elves and Men slain in that battle, along with their gear and weaponry.
