Gil-galad, Rings of Power

"It is recorded that Ereinion was given the name Gil-galad 'Star of Radiance' 'because his helm and mail, and his shield overlaid with silver and set with a device of white stars, shone from afar like a star in sunlight or moonlight, and could be seen by Elvish eyes at a great distance if he stood upon a height'."

Unfinished Tales

“His sword was long, his lance was keen,

his shining helm afar was seen;

the countless stars of heaven's field

were mirrored in his silver shield.”

LotR, FotR, ‘A Knife in the Dark’

Gil-galad inherited the title of High King of the Noldor and in The Second Age establish the kingdom of Lindon. Gil-galad led many of the Noldor and Sindar in peace for centuries. Together Cirdan, Gil-galad, and Elrond established a strong alliance with the Númenoreans. Gil-galad was a very wise ruler. He and Elrond sensed that Annatar (Sauron in fair form) was not what he seemed to be, and refused to let him enter Lindon. He did accepts one of the elvish Rings of Power from Celebrimbor. Gil-galad united the forces of Eregion and Lindon and led these armies (along with his Númenórean allies) in the War of the Elves and Sauron. Gil-galad remains focused on the threat of Sauron over the years, and centuries later after Númenor is destroyed, Gil-galad allies himself with the new kingdoms of Gondor and Arnor, eventually forming the Last Alliance of Elves and Men. Together with Isildur, Gil-galad leads his army to attack Sauron in Mordor. And, after years of fighting, he is finally killed by Sauron himself.
