Wētā Workshop Rings of Power Orcs
Wētā Workshop have confirmed their crews were involved in bringing The Rings of Power Orcs to life, as seem in recently released images.
A common procedure to make movie prosthetics involves
lifecasting. For facial prosthetics, an actor’s head is completely cover in skin-safe
silicone to make a mold. Once the silicone has dried, plaster strips are placed
on top to make a hard cast. Then when the plaster is set, it and the silicone
are carefully removed from the actor’s head. This negative cast is then used to
create a 3D replica of the actor’s face. Makeup artists use the mold as a base
to create custom prosthetic pieces that will fit the actor perfectly according
to the character required. Skilled make-up artists mold facial features with Sculpt
Gel, foam latex or silicone rubber and can add fake teeth, bald caps, ear
extensions, scars or wounds.
This process involving practical makeup effects seems to be in general use in The Rings of Power.
