Nimloth – The Rings of Power

Nimloth was the White Tree which grew in the King’s Court in Armenelos on the isle of Númenor. Nimloth was a gift from the Elves brought from Tol Eressëa, a large island off the coast of Aman as a symbol of friendship between the two races. This was a seedling of Celeborn, a White Tree that flourished on Tol Eressëa. The lineage of this tree extends back to Galathilion, a tree made by the Valar Yavanna for the Elves of the city of Tirion. Galathilion was made in memory of Telperion, the eldest of the Two Trees of Valinor. Nimloth’s blossoms appeared as the Sun set, and its perfume filled the night in Númenor's royal city

Tar-Palantír, King of Númenor, tended the Tree and honored it, prophesized that when the Tree died, the line of Kings would fail. With the descent of Numenor in darkness, under the influence of Annatar/Sauron, Nimloth was cut down late in the Second Age and its wood was used to light the first flames in the fire of the new religion which worshipped Melkor.

However, the night before Isildur stole a fruit from the tree and planted it in secret. The fruit grew into a seedling that Isildur carried to Middle-earth with him during the Downfall of Númenor. That seedling was planted in Minas Ithil, and was destroyed before the end of the Second Age. Its seedling in turn grew into the White Tree of Gondor.

In The Rings of Power, Nimloth is shown weeping, its blossom falling. This scattering onto the royal courts is the first of many signs of Númenor’s descent into darkness and turning away from the Valar.

Etymology: Nimloth is Sindarin for "White Blossom", from nim "white" and loth "flower".
