The Rings o Power – Palantíri
We know from The Silmarillion that Fëanor most likely created the palantíri. How many were constructed is unknown. The stones were made of a dark crystal, indestructible by any normal means, except perhaps the fire of Mount Doom. Some measured just a foot in diameter, while others were too large for men to carry. The Elves brought at least seven palantíri to Amandil, the last Lord of Andúnië in Númenor, to comfort the Faithful, as the Shadow fell upon Númenor and the Elves could no longer visit.
Characteristics of a palantír
·
Dual purpose of the stones: to communicate with
one another, and to see afar.
·
When linked with each other they revealed what
was near another stone.
·
Those of strong will and mind could direct their
gaze anywhere, both in space and time.
·
They could see "visions of the things in
the mind" of the person looking into another stone
·
The Stone which eventually went to Osgiliath had
power over other stones including the ability to eavesdrop.
·
Someone powerful such as Sauron could dominate a
weaker user through the stone as we saw with Saruman in the Third Age.
Unfinished Tales "The Palantíri", The Silmarillion
"Of the Rings of Power & the Third Age, The Two Towers, "The
Palantír"
In The Rings of Power, we see Galadriel and Regent Queen
Miriel using a palantír to see a future vision of the destruction of Númenor. Miriel
says it’s unknown whether the other six have been lost or hidden.
In the Tolkien text The Faithful take all seven of the seeing
stones to Middle-earth before Númenor sinks into the sea.
