The Rings of Power - The Song of the Roots of Hithaeglir – The Silmarils
“…and he pondered how the light of the Trees, the glory of the Blessed Realm, might be preserved imperishable. Then he began a long and secret labour, and he summoned all his lore, and his power, and his subtle skill; and at the end of all he made the Silmarils.” The Silmarillion
In episode 5, Gil-Galad takes Elrond to a tree which is slowly being infected with darkness. The High King explains this is evidence of the growing corruption of Middle-earth, an indication that the light of the Elves is fading. The discovery of mithril by the Dwarves, which contain the light of the Two Trees of Valinor via the Silmarils, will make the Elves whole again.
From Tolkien’s Lore
The Silmarils were three gems of immense beauty, created by Fëanor in Aman during the Years of the Trees, thousands of years before the events of the Second Age or of The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings. Melkor and Ungoliant destroyed the Two Trees in Valinor and stole the Silmarils, now containing all that remained of the light of the Trees. This resulted in the rebellion and Doom of the Noldor, the Kinslaying and the war of the Elves against Morgoth.
One Silmaril is worn upon the brow of Eärendil, Elrond’s father, who sailed to Aman seeking help from the Valar against the oppression of Morgoth. He sails the night sky in his ship Vingilot as the evening star. The other two Silmarils were stolen by the last two surviving sons of Fëanor, Maedhros and Maglor. But the evilness of these two meant they could not hold these holy relics, and their hands were burned. Driven mad by the agony, Maedhros threw himself, with the Silmaril, into a fiery pit in the earth, while Maglor threw the Silmaril itself into the sea.
TroP lore - The Song of the Roots of Hithaeglir
Hithaeglir is a Sindarin word for the Misty Mountains
The song suggests that one of the Silmarils is contained within a tree. An Elf warrior protecting this tree from the darkness battles against a Balrog of Morgoth. A bolt of lightning strikes the tree during the battle between the Elf and the Balrog. The Silmaril is destroyed and its light and essence seep into the earth, forming mithril within veins of rock.
Elrond does say this is an obscure legend largely thought to be apocryphal. There are are suggestions this is the work of Annatar spreading deceit and issuing darkness and that Celebrimbor is already falling under his influence.
