Don’t you just love the Middle-earth fandom! The Rings of Power trailer was recently released with a sequence showing Galadriel placing an Elven helmet on a huge pile. Within days fans are undertaking mathematical computation attempting to compute the number of helmets, and thus the death toll from this horrific battle. This sequence harkens to The Hill of the Slain, or Haudh-en-Ndengin, a huge mound that stood alone in the middle of the burned and ruined land of Anfauglith, in the north of Beleriand. It was raised by Morgoth's Orcs after the victory in the terrible battle of Nirnaeth Arnoediad, the Battle of Unnumbered Tears. Beneath it lay the bodies of the Elves and Men slain in that battle, along with their gear and weaponry. Ref:TolkienGateway Artwork: @Tolkien_erklart, @HdRMythen

Dwarves - Rings of Power "They are a tough, thrawn race for the most part, secretive, laborious, retentive of the memory of injuries (and of benefits), lovers of stone, of gems, of things that take shape under the hands of the craftsmen rather than things that live by their own life. But are not evil by nature, and few ever served the Enemy of free will, whatever the tales of Men alleged. "Yet in secret...they used their own strange tongue, changed little by the years; for it had become a tongue of lore rather than cradle-speech, and they tended it and guarded it as a treasure of the past. Few of other races have succeeded in learning it." LotR, RotK, Appendix F

Ents in the Second Age – Ents in Rings of Power “We Ents do not like being roused; and we never are roused unless it is clear to us that our trees and our lives are in great danger. That has not happened in this Forest since the wars of Sauron and the Men of the Sea.” LotR, TTT, ‘Treebeard’ The Ents were sentient, humanoid beings created at the request of Yavanna to be Shepherds of the Trees, and to protect the forests from Orcs, Dwarves and other perils. The Ents were either souls sent to inhabit trees, or slowly took the likeness of trees owing to their inborn love of trees. Ents were the most ancient living creatures surviving in Middle-earth by the time of the War of the Ring. Once there were Entwives too, but during the First or the Second Age they started to move away from the Ents because they liked to plant and care for small things like vegetables, grass and flowers, while the male Ents tended the larger trees of the great forest. The Entwives passed the River An...

Rings of Power Pictographs & Runes The production team at Rings of Power have included a number of Tolkien references with the use pictographs and runes, as seen in the second teaser trailer. When Sadoc Burrows, Lenny Henry, is looking at a parchment in the teaser trailer, we see markings, possibly a star chart or sky notes, written in a script similar to the Goblin Alphabet used by the goblins of the North Pole in The Father Christmas Letters. These were also used in the ‘hands pictures’ on a scroll released in February. We also see Durin IV, played by Owain Arthur, wearing a gorget, a steel or leather collar to protect the throat, with rune inscriptions displayed. The cirths read: “…E A th L E S 🇸.” Referencing the Dwarven title “Durin the Deathless”, founded the House of Durin and first King of Durin's folk. This is not written in the secret language of the Dwarves, Khuzdul. Ref:@JoelMerriner,@NosyDr,PrimeVideo

Nothing is Evil in the Beginning? Rings of Power Amazon Prime Video released a short re-run of the Rings of Power teaser trailer emphasising the statement: “Nothing is Evil in the Beginning?” When discussing what to do with the One Ring at the Council of Elrond, a significant speech is made by Elrond, including the sentences: “For nothing is evil in the beginning. Even Sauron was not so.” FotR He was explaining why it was ill advised to wield the One Ring to fight Sauron, as Boromir suggested. Tolkien explains further in Letter #153 “Sauron was of course not ‘evil’ in origin. He was a ‘spirit’ corrupted by the Prime Dark Lord (the Prime sub-creative Rebel) Morgoth. He was given an opportunity of repentance, when Morgoth was overcome, but could not face the humiliation of recantation, and suing for pardon; and so his temporary turn to good and ‘benevolence’ ended in greater relapse, until he became the main representative of Evil of later ages.” At the end of the dec...

Gil-galad, Rings of Power "It is recorded that Ereinion was given the name Gil-galad 'Star of Radiance' 'because his helm and mail, and his shield overlaid with silver and set with a device of white stars, shone from afar like a star in sunlight or moonlight, and could be seen by Elvish eyes at a great distance if he stood upon a height'." Unfinished Tales “His sword was long, his lance was keen, his shining helm afar was seen; the countless stars of heaven's field were mirrored in his silver shield.” LotR, FotR, ‘A Knife in the Dark’ Gil-galad inherited the title of High King of the Noldor and in The Second Age establish the kingdom of Lindon. Gil-galad led many of the Noldor and Sindar in peace for centuries. Together Cirdan, Gil-galad, and Elrond established a strong alliance with the Númenoreans. Gil-galad was a very wise ruler. He and Elrond sensed that Annatar (Sauron in fair form) was not what he seemed to be, and refused to let hi...

Wētā Workshop Rings of Power Orcs Wētā Workshop have confirmed their crews were involved in bringing The Rings of Power Orcs to life, as seem in recently released images. A common procedure to make movie prosthetics involves lifecasting. For facial prosthetics, an actor’s head is completely cover in skin-safe silicone to make a mold. Once the silicone has dried, plaster strips are placed on top to make a hard cast. Then when the plaster is set, it and the silicone are carefully removed from the actor’s head. This negative cast is then used to create a 3D replica of the actor’s face. Makeup artists use the mold as a base to create custom prosthetic pieces that will fit the actor perfectly according to the character required. Skilled make-up artists mold facial features with Sculpt Gel, foam latex or silicone rubber and can add fake teeth, bald caps, ear extensions, scars or wounds. This process involving practical makeup effects seems to be in general use in The Rings of Pow...

Celebrimbor, Rings of Power "In Eregion the craftsmen of the Gwaith-i-Mírdain, the People of the Jewel-smiths, surpassed in cunning all that have ever wrought, save only Fëanor himself; and indeed greatest in skill among them was Celebrimbor, son of Curufin." The Silmarillion, ‘Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age’ Grandson of the talented and rebellious Fëanor, Celebrimbor was the greatest craftsman in the Second Age of Middle-earth. His forging of the Rings of Power led to the dominion and eventual downfall of Sauron in the War of the Ring. Born in Valinor, Celebrimbor early years are not known, but he did follow his father and grandfather into the Exile of the Noldor. Claiming to be an emissary of the Valar, Sauron came as Annatar and with his guidance and instruction, Celebrimbor and the Gwaith-i-Mí...
